What is Positive Psychology?

Positive Psychology is the scientific study of what makes life most worth living, as well as the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive. The field is founded on the belief that people want to lead meaningful and fulfilling lives, to cultivate what is best within themselves, and to enhance their experiences of love, work, and play.

Initiated in 1998 by Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmihaly, Positive psychology is primarily concerned with using psychological theory, research and intervention techniques to understand the positive, adaptive, creative and emotionally fulfilling aspects of human behavior. It is a call for psychological science and practice to be as concerned with strength as with weakness; as interested in building the best things in life as in repairing the worst.

According to Martin Seligman, extensive testing has isolated six essential components of sustained well-being. Positive Psycholgy is rich with tools for creating/enhancing each of them. The aspects of a life well-lived, or flourishing, are:

  • Postive Emotions
  • Engagement (flow, samadhi)
  • Relationships
  • Meaning
  • Accomplishments
  • Vitality
